A charming addition adds modern function to this historic home.

This 1900 Colonial Revival home in Richmond’s historic Three Chopt neighborhood was reimagined for a growing family seeking modern function without sacrificing timeless character. In collaboration with Peter Labau of Good House Design, the project blended thoughtful spatial planning, custom millwork, and sensitive preservation of original architectural details.

The design introduced a new mudroom addition, replacing a beloved porch that had long served as the family’s main entry. While the transition was sentimental, the new space quickly became a favorite; its custom cabinetry, durable finishes, and integrated storage make every day routines effortless and organized.

A custom built-in bench in the family room solved long-standing seating challenges, providing a cozy gathering spot that maximizes every inch of space. In one of the daughters’ rooms, bespoke built-ins now offer flexible storage and sleeping arrangements, allowing the children to rotate rooms as their needs evolve, a playful and practical solution for a growing household.

Upstairs, the bathrooms were reconfigured to increase storage and functionality, with a new ensuite primary bath providing privacy and comfort while maintaining the home’s architectural integrity.

In the kitchen, a custom island was added without increasing the square footage, improving flow and functionality while maintaining the home’s intimate scale. Historic Colonial Revival details, from trim profiles to hardware, were preserved and subtly enhanced, bridging old-world charm with contemporary livability.

Throughout, craftsmanship and customization drove the design process, ensuring that every new element, from cabinetry to furniture, felt authentically part of the home’s century-old story.
